Assistant Professor, COMSATS University Islamabad Lahore Campus
5 years of experience
I am Dr. Muhammad Imran Rafiq, an accomplished Chemical Engineer with over thirteen years of experience spanning industrial research, academic teaching, and cutting-edge technology development in the energy storage sector. My core expertise lies in designing and developing functionalized carbon composite electrodes for hybrid supercapacitors and advanced batteries, as well as working extensively with redox-active electrolytes.
Throughout my career, I have maintained, operated, and trained students and technical staff on a wide range of specialized scientific equipment crucial to electrochemical research and industrial battery manufacturing. I have hands-on expertise with advanced electrochemical workstations and potentiostat-galvanostat systems (e.g., Gamry, Bio-Logic) for cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, ensuring routine calibration, troubleshooting, and smooth operation.
My role as a Process Engineer and R&D Scientist at National Battery Industries Pvt. Ltd. strengthened my practical skills in process monitoring and optimization of large-scale battery production, where I was responsible for the installation and commissioning of cell cyclers, electrode fabrication lines, and quality control instruments.
In my current role as Assistant Professor at COMSATS University, I have established and managed electrochemical labs, ensuring proper functioning of equipment such as BET Surface Area Analyzers, Thermogravimetric Analyzers (TGA), FT-IR Spectrometers, XRD (e.g., PANalytical), SEM (Zeiss Supra 35VP), and TEM (Zeiss T-10C). I actively train graduate and undergraduate students in the safe and effective use of these instruments for nanoscale materials analysis and performance characterization.
I also hold certifications in AutoCAD (2D & 3D drafting) and Process Simulation (HYSYS), supporting my capacity to integrate design and process control tools in battery research. Beyond routine operation, I develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) and training modules for safe handling, troubleshooting, and maintenance of lab equipment, ensuring smooth lab operations and knowledge transfer to my students and research teams.
Key projects include leading the fabrication of 3D green template-based electrodes, scaling up lab-scale results to industrial feasibility, and publishing high-impact research on novel carbon materials for sustainable energy storage. I have successfully supervised numerous research theses on advanced electrode development and maintain collaborative R&D engagements bridging academia and industry.
My experience, practical know-how, and commitment to training the next generation of engineers position me as a versatile professional capable of managing specialized scientific equipment and translating research into impactful industrial solutions.
I specialize in advanced electrochemical and materials characterization equipment and fabrication tools used for energy storage research and development. This includes:
Electrochemical Workstations / Potentiostat-Galvanostat Systems(e.g., CHI760, Gamry, Bio-Logic, CH Instruments) for cyclic voltammetry, EIS, GCD, and other electrochemical analyses.
Battery Testers / Cell Cyclers (e.g., Neware, Arbin, LAND) for performance and life-cycle testing of batteries and hybrid supercapacitors.
Material Characterization Instruments including BET Surface Area Analyzers (e.g., Micromeritics ASAP), FTIR, Raman Spectrometers, and XRD (e.g., PANalytical Empyrean).
Microscopy Tools such as SEM and TEM for electrode material analysis (e.g., JEOL, FEI).
Electrode Fabrication and Processing Equipment, including glove boxes, vacuum ovens, spin coaters, and slurry mixers.
Redox-Active Electrolyte Preparation and Analysis Equipment, including UV-Vis spectrophotometers and titration systems.
My expertise covers the full workflow from electrode material synthesis and device assembly to performance testing and failure analysis.
