Assistant Professor, Islamia College University Peshawar
15 years of experience
Dr. Muhammad Ilyas is a molecular biologist specializing in human genomics and biomedical informatics. He has worked at leading international institutes including the Korean Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology, University College London and Harvard University. His research focuses on identifying ethnic and tribal-specific genetic mutations associated with rare and common diseases using molecular and computational genomics approaches. He decoded the first Pakhtun genome, developed an NGS analysis pipeline, created the Pakistani Genetic Variants Database (PGVDB), and launched the “GenoLuca” mobile app for identifying genetic disease patients. Dr. Ilyas previously served as Director of the Centre for Human Genetics at Hazara University, where he established advanced research laboratories and secured multiple research grants with impact-factor publications. He has also contributed to establishing major research initiatives at the Centre for Omic Sciences, Islamia College Peshawar. His achievements have been recognized through several awards including the Genetics Excellence Award from the American Society for Human Genetics, HEC Best Research Paper Award, HEC International Fellowship, IYF Outstanding Researcher Award, and the PCST Research Productivity Award. Alongside his research, he actively promotes science communication, STEM education, and mentorship of young researchers across Pakistan.
Genomics infrastructure including high-performance computing clusters for NGS data processing, variant calling, population genomics, and large-scale genomic data management, along with genetic variant interpretation for disease risk assessment, precision medicine insights, and ancestry inference.
