About

Dr. Kanendra Naidu is a Chartered Engineer and Senior Lecturer with extensive hands-on experience in the industrial and scientific domains, particularly in power systems, renewable energy integration virtual power plant, carbon emission system and electric vehicle (EV) technologies. His professional background spans over 15 years across academia, consultancy and industry, focusing on the maintenance, installation, troubleshooting and training of specialized electrical and electronic equipment used in research and power system applications.
He has worked directly with photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), Vienna rectifiers and Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices. These systems were deployed and tested in university laboratories and research facilities. During his tenure as Head of Electrical Technology at UniKL BMI, Dr. Kanendra led the development of electrical energy and sustainable energy degree programme and was the project leader for setting up the SIEMENS Innovation and Resource Training Center (SIRTC) and UniKL BMI’s Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB). Dr. Kanendra also serves as a consultant for AMTEL Cellular on a Second-Life Battery Project, where he evaluates and integrates used lithium-ion batteries for energy storage applications.
As a technical speaker and trainer, he has conducted numerous workshops and seminars on MATLAB/Simulink, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Arduino microcontrollers for students, researchers and industry professionals. His engagements include keynote speeches, technical forums, and webinars, often highlighting AI, optimization, carbon emission management and smart technologies for energy efficiency. Notable speaking engagements include keynote addresses on vehicle recycling and circular economy in ASEAN, smart city management in Malaysia, technical webinars on nature-inspired optimization algorithms for power system challenges and international conference presentations on intelligent control for power systems.
He has also played an active role in postgraduate training by supervising research projects focused on the design and optimization of hybrid renewable energy systems, intelligent EV charging strategies and battery health prediction using LSTM and deep learning techniques. His research efforts are strongly supported by competitive national grants, including the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS), Innovation Matching Grant (IMAP) and Micro Industry Hub (MIH). These grants totaling USD200,000 have enabled the development and real-world testing of intelligent controllers, fault-tolerant power converter architectures and AI-based energy management systems. He has supervised and co-supervised 10 Master's and 6 PhD students, focusing on areas such as hybrid renewable energy systems, EV charging optimization, battery health prediction using deep learning, photovoltaic power forecasting, and fault-tolerant power converter design.
He holds certifications as a Professional Technologist (P.Tech, MBOT), Chartered Engineer (UK) and Senior IEEE Member and has serves as an audit panel member for BEM-ETAC accreditation body. Overall, Dr. Kanendra combines both technical knowledge with practical field experience, offering a unique skill set in deploying, maintaining and teaching power system and energy-related equipment in industrial and research settings.
