Have been involved in application of stable isotopes in health and diagnostics since joining Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in 1994. Mostly the work involved nuclear techniques using isotope ratio mass spectrometry instrumentation. Participated in establishment of two isotope ratio mass spectrometer laboratories at PINSTECH after getting training from Thermo Finnigan factory at Bremen, Germany. Have expertise in installation, operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of isotope ratio mass spectrometers (IRMS). Our lab has three Delta IRMSs from Thermo while there is one Laser Water Isotope Analyzer (LWIA). After a long involvement in International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) projects, The IAEA entrusted me with expert missions to Morocco, Senegal and Kuwait to assist the teams there in analysis of doubly labelled water (deuterium and oxygen­18 enrichment) by IRMS. Helped the teams in making new internal standards, advised the teams on quality control criteria and data screening, and provided training to the nutrition teams on the calculation of total daily energy expenditure and body composition from doubly labelled water results using an Excel spreadsheet. In addition, the teams were provided hands on training on routine service/maintenance of IRMS.
